What we record
One record represents one yarn line, not each color. We start with the manufacturer’s fiber, construction, package, gauge, care and weight-category information. Field-level source links and check dates sit beside the values. Color-specific manufacturer pages may supply a line’s specifications; check your own ball band for variations or reformulations.
Published stitch and row gauge are retained in the source’s units. A source may pair 4 inches with 10 cm; they are not exactly equal. We do not silently convert those labels. Metric length per 100 g is calculated from the published meters and grams and labeled as a calculation. It is not a measured thickness.
What a candidate means
Our side-by-side tool displays your chosen pair without scoring it. Detail-page shortlists show up to three records with overlapping published stitch gauge and a checked US retailer listing. Their order is editorially neutral; they are not a ranking of compatibility. Gauge overlap cannot establish matching fiber, construction, row gauge or fabric.
Selected comparison notes explain specific differences, including cases where a seemingly plausible replacement is a poor fit. We make no compatibility-percentage, “perfect substitute,” softness or durability claims. No physical testing has been performed for this directory.
Unknowns and disagreements stay visible
“Not verified” means our captured source does not support a value. We do not fill construction or row-gauge gaps from a photograph, a similarly named yarn or a prediction. When sources disagree, the primary manufacturer value remains the main specification and the conflicting statement is shown with its source. A missing conflict note does not certify agreement across every retailer.
What US retailer evidence establishes
Each listed shop has both a checked yarn listing and published evidence of a US business location and US shipping service. Those are different checks. A US-facing website, dollar price, or .us domain alone does not qualify. We link the business-location and shipping evidence so you can examine the basis.
Listings are dated observations, not live inventory. We have not placed test orders or independently confirmed the dispatch origin of individual items. Contact the retailer for current stock, color, quantity, dye lot, shipping origin and delivery terms. Where no qualifying listing is recorded, we say so without claiming that no US seller exists.
Sources and reuse
Manufacturer specifications come first; retailers corroborate selected facts and availability evidence. We write our own comparisons and use our own graphics. Product photographs, patterns, reviews, competitor scores and product descriptions are not republished. Brand names identify the products and do not imply endorsement.
Public pages are not automatically openly licensed. Our source review has not established a blanket license for any manufacturer’s content. We retain compact factual references and original analysis, not a licensed copy of their catalog. Requests about attribution, corrections or reuse concerns can be sent through our contact page.
Before you commit to a project
- Match the pattern’s strand arrangement and stitch pattern when making a swatch.
- Wash and dry it according to the yarn’s instructions and your intended care routine.
- Measure stitch and row gauge, then assess coverage, drape, feel and stability.
- Compare the pattern’s total length requirement. Round to whole packages and allow separately for swatching and adjustments.
- If the fabric is wrong at the required gauge, choose another yarn or a more suitable pattern.
The current reference shelf
30 yarn lines across five manufacturers. 28 currently include checked US retailer listings. Construction and some row gauges remain unknown; the directory is deliberately incomplete.
