Can the two Sport yarns substitute for each other?
Cascade 220 Sport and 220 Superwash Sport are reasonable candidates to compare for a pattern calling for 22–24 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm). Both product pages list that range on US 5–6 / 3.75–4 mm needles, and both packages weigh 50 g. Their shared range supports a swatching trial; it does not establish identical fabric. Wool type, care and length per package differ, so changing between these yarns requires more than matching the original number of balls.
The wool specification and wash routine differ
Cascade 220 Sport is 100% Peruvian Highland wool, with cold hand washing and flat drying specified. 220 Superwash Sport is 100% superwash merino wool, with cool machine washing and low tumble drying specified. If machine laundering is a requirement, the Superwash Sport instructions are relevant to that choice. Follow the label for the yarn actually purchased and test the intended wash and dry routine on your sample. The standard Sport record does not verify its treatment, and these specifications cannot establish equal softness, recovery or durability.
Neither Sport package contains 220 yards
Cascade lists 220 Sport at approximately 164 yards (150 m) per 50 g and 220 Superwash Sport at approximately 137 yards (125 m) per 50 g. The 220 family name is not the length of either Sport package. Check the full line name on both the pattern and the retailer listing: standard Cascade 220, 220 Superwash and 220 Superwash Sport Wave are separate products. Use the published length for the exact yarn line when estimating a replacement quantity.
For 900 m: six Sport packages or eight Superwash Sport packages
Using Cascade’s published metre figures, an illustrative 900 m requirement takes six 150 m packages of Cascade 220 Sport or eight 125 m packages of 220 Superwash Sport. Seven Superwash Sport packages total 875 m and fall short. Six standard Sport packages reach 900 m exactly, leaving no additional length for a separate swatch. Calculate your actual pattern requirement, round each yarn up to whole packages, and allow separately for swatching or modifications. Matching the 50 g package weight would miss the difference in available length.
Matching stitch gauge leaves row gauge to measure
A row gauge is not verified in the captured primary specifications for either Sport yarn. Do not infer one from the shared stitch range or needle recommendation. Knit the pattern stitch and strand combination, wash and dry the sample as intended, then measure both stitches and rows. A different row gauge matters when shaping follows a fixed row count rather than a measured length. If you can reach the stitch count only with a fabric that does not suit the design, choose another yarn rather than forcing the substitution.
Check the exact listing before ordering
The table links dated Yarn.com / WEBS listings for both Sport lines. Their check dates identify the retail evidence retained in this directory; they do not promise current stock, a matching dye lot or a dispatch location. Confirm the exact line and enough of your chosen shade directly with the seller. The calculator below opens with standard 220 Sport as the pattern yarn and Superwash Sport as the substitute; reverse the selections when working in the other direction.
